WPM Test: How to Measure and Improve
What Is WPM?
WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is the standard measure of typing speed used worldwide. The calculation normalizes word length by dividing total characters by 5 (the average length of an English word including the space after it).
Formula: WPM = (total characters typed / 5) / elapsed time in minutes
How WPM Tests Work
A standard WPM test presents a passage of text that you type as quickly and accurately as possible. The test measures two things:
- Speed (WPM): How fast you type the correct characters
- Accuracy (%): What percentage of your keystrokes are correct
Most tests use real English text rather than random characters, because real text better simulates actual typing conditions and benefits from the brain's natural language processing.
What Affects Your WPM Score
Text Complexity
Simple, common words produce higher WPM scores than technical jargon or mixed-case text with numbers and symbols. This is normal — your "real world" WPM varies based on what you are typing.
Test Duration
Shorter tests (30 seconds) can produce artificially high or low scores due to variance. Tests of 1-5 minutes give a more reliable measure of your true typing speed.
Familiarity with Content
You will type faster when the text feels natural and predictable. Unusual words or sentence structures slow you down. This is why diverse practice content is important for building well-rounded speed.
Your Physical State
Fatigue, distraction, and even time of day can affect your score. For the most consistent results, test yourself at a similar time each day when you are alert but not stressed.
WPM Benchmarks
| WPM Range | Level | Typical For |
|---|---|---|
| 0-25 | Beginner | New typists, hunt-and-peck typists |
| 25-40 | Below Average | Casual typists |
| 40-55 | Average | Most office workers |
| 55-75 | Above Average | Experienced computer users |
| 75-95 | Fast | Trained typists, developers |
| 95-120 | Very Fast | Professional typists |
| 120+ | Exceptional | Competition-level typists |
How to Improve Your WPM
- Learn touch typing — typing without looking at the keyboard is the foundation of speed
- Practice daily — 15-20 minutes of focused practice each day
- Focus on accuracy first — speed naturally follows good technique
- Target weak keys — identify and drill your slowest keys
- Use typing games — they make practice engaging and build speed under pressure
- Track progress — watching your WPM improve over time is motivating
